6 1/2 hours before the new year is here and I am contemplating the events that happened this year. What a year it has been, lots of things (good and bad), some are monumental, some are just blah but still it has been a pretty good year.
Things/events that happened this year....
Jim is finally getting better for which I am truly grateful. My sister, Deen, had her first child, a beautiful little girl named Eva Khairunnisa. My other niece, Karsen, turned 3 the day before our 12th wedding anniversary. My 2 nephews, Aman and Apan are naughtier than ever (at least that's what their parents told me).
Barrack Obama was elected as the first black for the US. What an event that was. I am happy to see that a more qualified person is elected to the highest office in the country.
Err what else happened in 2008... So many and I can't remember all of them at the moment.
Anyways, customers are starting to pore into the bank at the moment (no doubt to withdraw money for their New Year party tonight) so I better stop here.
Have a Happy & Safe New Year everyone!!!

"Dark Knight" & "Recount"
We rented "Dark Knight" & "Recount" over the weekend and these were 2 of the best movies I've watched all year. "Dark Knight" was really good and I think Heath Ledger was awesome as the Joker. "Batman Returns" & "Dark Knight" are my favorite of the Batman series because they are more serious and not cartoonish (George Clooney was the worst!). Christian Bale returns as Batman/Bruce Wayne as well as Gary Oldman as Lieutanent Gordan. Maggie Gyllenhaal played Rachel Dawes (she way better than Katie Holmes in "Batman Returns"). Aaron Eckhart played district attorney Harvey Dent who later on became Two Face. But best of all was Heath Ledger as the Joker. Ledger's Joker was more psychotic & disturbing than Jack Nicholson's Joker (which was more in line with the tv series). Anyways, if you haven't seen this movie, rent it....
"Recount" was about the 36 days fiasco in Florida during the election year 2000 between the Democratic nominee Al Gore and the Republican's George Bush. Due to several "mistakes" the Florida electoral votes can't be decided because both nominees were too close. Al Gore team wanted a recount because in several counties in Florida voters said that they had mistakenly voted for Pat Buchanan instead of Al Gore to the way the voters ballot (known as Chad) was designed. There were quite a few famous actors in this movie, among them, Kevin Spacey, Tom Wilkinson, Ed Bagley Jr, John Hurt & Laura Dern. All of them were really good in the role they played in. Really good movie...

"Tropic Thunder" & "The Happening"
We rented "Tropic Thunder" earlier this month and really loved it. It was a spoof about a bunch of actors who while filming their "base on a true story" movie about a Vietnam vet experience found themselves in a true life or death situation. The movie starred Ben Stiller, Robert Downey Jr & Jack Black, among others. This was one of the funniest movies that we've watched. I would recommend it to anyone who appreciate a good funny movie.
We also saw "The Happening" the same weekend we saw "Tropic Thunder". I normally like all of M Night Shyamalan's movie ("The Sixth Sense" & "Signs" being my most favorite) but this movie was very dissappointing for me. There were a lot of gory stuff and I think that was the main point of the movie - to be gory. Mark Wahlberg was not very convincing as a scientist/teacher and the plot was just unrealistic. So, unlike "Tropic Thunder" I would not recommend this movie (especially kids) unless you just like watching people doing disgusting stuff to themselves for the fun of it.
Riding an Old Bicycle
Today is the end of my 2nd week at my "new" job. It is not exactly new since I had the same job about 4 years ago. You see, after much thinking and "heart-to-brain" talk with myself, I decided to go back to the bank which I left 4 years ago. I don't have to do much training classes except to go through some training modules online. Most of it I already know since I was with the bank for over 3 years before I quit. The modules are more of a refresher course for me as well as keep me up to date with some new bank policies and procedures. Still, it can get a little overwhelming..I feel like a sponge soaking up all these knowledge..he he he
A few people (family, friends, colleages and yes, even customers) have asked me if I like going back to the bank and my answer is always "Yes & No". "Yes" because the benefits are awesome!!! "No" because everyday that I am at the bank, it reminds me of why I left in the first place. The "Yes" definitely outweight the "No" but when certain situations came up, that "No" does loom heavily on my head.
I am sure you are wondering what the "No" is, right? Well, the job itself is not bad at all but I just despise (hate is too harsh but I do feel it sometimes) dealing with people. Not all people, just those who are assholes, jerks, ..etc, oh you know those people...some of you are those people in fact.
All the jobs I have had since I was in college had been in the public service/customer service sector so at this point of my life I am truly tired of dealing with people. I like my little "cave" at my other job because I do not have to deal with people, most of the time (usually just my co-workers). It was just me, the computer and a bunch of paperwork & data entries...
So there you go...my 2nd weeks at my "new" job...it is just like riding a bicycle

"Get Smart" & "Forgetting Sarah Marshall"
We rented a movie for quite awhile and this weekend we decided to watch "Get Smart" & "Forgetting Sarah Marshall"...
"Get Smart" was a remake of the TV show "Get Smart". Steve Carell played Maxwell "Agent 86" Smart and Anne Hathaway was his reluctant partner, Agent 99 for a secret agency called CONTROL. When the CONTROL headquarters were infaltrated by their nemesis KAOS and their agents identities compromised, Agents 86 & 99 has to do whatever they can to thwart the plans of KAOS...
I thought the movie was funny. I definitely love Steve Carell!!! Dwayne Johnson aka The Rock played Agent 23 was funny too....
"Forgetting Sarah Marshall" was funny too though I thought it could be funnier. Jason Segel played Peter Bretter who after being dumped by his actress girlfriend, Sarah Marshall (Kristen Bell) went to Hawaii in an attempt to forget her. Little did he know Sarah decided to vacation at the same resort with her new boyfriend, Aldous Snow (Russell Brand). As you can imagine, Peter trying to forget Sarah but she keeps popping up wherever he goes...
The movie is funnier though was a little bit predictable...I still recommend watching it if you want some laugh...

21 Economics Models Explained with Cows
Someone emailed me this and I thought it was "educational" ;-)
SOCIALISM: You have 2 cows. You give one to your neighbor.
COMMUNISM: You have 2 cows. The State takes both and gives you some milk.
FASCISM: You have 2 cows. The State takes both and sells you some milk.
NAZISM: You have 2 cows. The State takes both and shoots you.
BUREAUCRATISM: You have 2 cows. The State takes both, shoots one, milks the other, and then throws the milk away...
TRADITIONAL CAPITALISM: You have two cows. You sell one and buy a bull. Your herd multiplies, and the economy grows. You sell them and retire on the income.
SURREALISM: You have two giraffes. The government requires you to take harmonica lessons.
AN AMERICAN CORPORATION: You have two cows. You sell one, and force the other to produce the milk of four cows. Later, you hire a consultant to analyze why the cow has dropped dead.
ENRON-LIKE VENTURE CAPITALISM: You have two cows. You sell three of them to your publicly listed company, using letters of credit opened by your brother-in-law at the bank, then execute a debt/equity swap with an associated general offer so that you get all four cows back, with a tax exemption for five cows. The milk rights of the six cows are transferred via an intermediary to a Cayman Island Company secretly owned by the majority shareholder who sells the rights to all seven cows back to your listed company. The annual report says the company owns eight cows, with an option on one more. You sell one cow to buy a new president of the United States , leaving you with nine cows. No balance sheet provided with the release. The public then buys your bull.
A FRENCH CORPORATION: You have two cows. You go on strike, organize a riot, and block the roads, because you want three cows.
A JAPANESE CORPORATION: You have two cows. You redesign them so they are one-tenth the size of an ordinary cow and produce twenty times the milk. You then create a clever cow cartoon image called 'Cowkimon' and market it worldwide.
A GERMAN CORPORATION: You have two cows. You re-engineer them so they live for 100 years, eat once a month, and milk themselves.
AN ITALIAN CORPORATION: You have two cows, but you don't know where they are. You decide to have lunch.
A RUSSIAN CORPORATION: You have two cows. You count them and learn you have five cows. You count them again and learn you have 42 cows. You count them again and learn you have 2 cows. You stop counting cows and open another bottle of vodka.
A SWISS CORPORATION: You have 5000 cows. None of them belong to you. You charge the owners for storing them.
A CHINESE CORPORATION: You have two cows. You have 300 people milking them. You claim that you have full employment, and high bovine productivity. You arrest the newsman who reported the real situation.
AN INDIAN CORPORATION: You have two cows. You worship them.
A BRITISH CORPORATION: You have two cows. Both are mad.
AN IRAQI CORPORATION: Everyone thinks you have lots of cows. You tell them that you have none. No-one believes you, so they bomb the **** out of you and invade your country. You still have no cows, but at least now you are part of a Democracy....
AN AUSTRALIAN CORPORATION: You have two cows. Business seems pretty good. You close the office and go for a few beers to celebrate.
A NEW ZEALAND CORPORATION: You have two cows. The one on the left looks very attractive

Time Flies...
It has been awhile since I wrote anything on this blog... Lots of things had happened and I had wanted to write about it but for some reason or another I kept putting it off and putting it off and before you know it, it's already November. So, here goes:
SEPTEMBER
1. Jim started to see a new neurologist in Sun City. We are hopeful that the neurologist will find what is wrong and fix it.
2. The economy sucked! I am still looking for a new job but since a lot of company are letting their employees go, the job propect is looking bleak.
OCTOBER
1. Jim started his physical therapy this month and his symptoms are improving. We are still hopeful that we can find what is going on with his brain. In the meantime, I'm still driving him around to his doctor's appointments.
2. Job prospect is still blahh...Had a few interviews but they are offering less than what I'm making right now (which is not a lot to begin with).
3. Hopeful that Obama, if elected, will turn this country around.
NOVEMBER
1. Obama was elected !!!! Was amazed at how the country (& the whole world) reacted to his election. There is still hope for this country yet!
2. Job search still depressing me...
3. Found out our COBRA insurance is going up to about $920/month starting January. That is more than our mortgage!!! If things doesn't change soon, I'll probably end up robbing a bank or something...
So, there you go, in a nutshell, what is going on with me.... I'm just grateful that I still have a roof to sleep under, food on the table and family & friends who cares & love me...

"Into the Wild"
We saw "Into the Wild" last night and thought it was really good. It is based on a true story about Christopher McCandles (Emile Hirsch), who right after graduating from Emory College in 1990, left all of his worldly possessions and embarked on a journey of self discovery. His aim was to eventually go to Alaska and along the way he met an assortment of characters who shaped his life. Despite having survived the winter in Alaska, his plan hit a snag when the river he crossed during winter is now a torrent rapid in the spring, thus trapping him. The movie is really awesome!!! Watch it!!
"Smart People"
Jim & I saw "Smart People" on Sunday and we both really liked it. It is about Lawrence Wetherhold (Dennis Quaid), who is a widower, an indifference father who is also a pompous professor of English Lit at Carnegie Mellon. A seizure and a fall had him going to the ER and there he met one of his former students, Dr Janet Hartigan (Sarah Jessica Parker) whom he starts to date, much to the horror of his daughter, Vanessa (Ellen Page). Lawrence's "loser" brother, Chuck (Thomas Haden Church) moved in to help around the house. The movie shows that sometimes the smartest people don't quite get it all together. It was a cute movie and I would recommend you watch it.
Other movies I recommend by actors in this movie:
1) Hard Candy - Ellen Page
2) Juno - Ellen Page
3) Spanglish - Thomas Haden Church
4) Sideways - Thomas Haden Church
5) The Family Stone - Sarah Jessica Parker

5 years ago today at about 3:30am, Malaysian time, I lost my mom, Raja Hajjah Hairul Nisha bt Raja Haji Hussein. I can't believe that it has been that long since she's been gone. Time flew so fast that it felt like yesterday.
I think it has been a little harder for me to accept that she is gone because I live so far away from home. I am not constantly reminded that she is gone. That doesn't mean that I don't miss her. I miss her lots!!! I still, on occassions, would pick up my phone wanting to dial my parents' house. But then I remembered that she's gone and the house is no longer ours.
Anyways, I miss you mummy.... (I better stop here before I start blubbering)

Eastern Promises
Jim & I just finished watching "Eastern Promises" and I definitely recommend this movie. It is about a midwife/nurse, Anna (Naomi Watts) who works in a hospital when a pregnant Russian teenager, Tatiana came bleeding. She wasn't able to save the teenager but the baby girl survived. Anna finds Tatiana's diary written in Russian language in her belongings and decided to find her family to deliver the baby. She brings the diary home and ask her uncle Stepan (who is Russian) to translate the document. Stepan refuses, but Anna finds a card of a restaurant owned by the Russian, Semyon (Armin Mueller-Stahl) inside the diary and she visits the old man trying to find a lead to contact Tatiana's family. When she mentions the existence of the diary, Semyon immediately offers to translate the document. However, Stepan translates part of the diary and Anna discovers that Semyon and his sick son Kirill had raped Tatiana when she was fourteen years old and forced her to work as prostitute in a brothel of their own. Further, Semyon is the dangerous boss of the Russian mafia "Vory v Zakone", jeopardizing the safety of Anna and her family. Meanwhile, Semyon's driver Nikolai Luzhin (Viggo Mortensen) gets close to Kirill and Semyon, climbing positions in the criminal organization, but he helps Anna, her family and the baby.
The movie is very good though there are quite a few violent scenes in it. Definitely not a movie for kids to watch. Do see it if you can.
Other movies by actors in this movie that I recommend watching:
1) A History of Violence - Viggo Mortensen
2) Lord of the Rings (all 3 movies) - Viggo Mortensen
3) King Kong - Naomi Watts
4) 21 Grams - Naomi Watts
5) 12 Angry Men - Armin Mueller-Stahl

Harold & Kumar Escape From Guantanamo Bay
Jim & I just finished watching "Harold & Kumar Escape From Guantanamo Bay" a couple of hours ago and I still haven't finished laughing. If you like the first movie, "Harold & Kumar Goes to White Castle", you will like this one. This movie takes place a few hours after the ending of the first movie. John Cho & Kal Penn playes Harold Lee & Kumar Patil, best buds, who was on their way to Amsterdam to meet up with their pretty neighbor who Harold has a crush on. On the plane, due to some misunderstanding, they were thought to be terrorist who is planning on bombing the plane so they were put in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
The DVD has an unrated version of the movie which came out with an R at the theaters. If you've seen the first movie, you'll know that there are a lot of nudity, swear words and drugs (mostly weed) in this one. Neil Patrick Harris returned for a cameo and he was hilarious. I would recommend this movie to anyone that doesn't think drugs, swear words, nudity & racial profiling are funny.

Ants Invasion
As Mondays are my normal day off, I did some grocery shopping yesterday. I bought some sugar free chocolate chip cookies and banana nut bread. After dinner last night, I left the container of cookies and bread on our kitchen counter. I've done this on several occassions before without any problem.
In the mornings, my 2 boys usually will try to wake me up so that I could feed them their breakfast. But this morning Sammy was quite persistent in wanting me to get up. Thinking that he is just extra hungry, I try to pat him so that I can catch more zzz before my alarm clock goes off at 6am. Anyways, after about 5 minutes of trying to calm Sammy down, I heard Jim got up and when into the kitchen. Then I heard him (from my very foggy sleep state) said, "Shirin, wake up, we've been invaded by ants"
Thinking that there are probably a couple of ants crawling on the cookies, I groggily got up and walked into the kitchen. And what greeted me in the kitchen jolted me wide awake. There wasn't just 2 ants, there were hundreds of them!!! Never before have I seen swarm of ants that many. They had a line from the corner in my pantry, across the kitchen floor, up the side of the kitchen counter, all the way along the sink, behind my spice rack and over to the stove. We've never had problem with ants before, though we do put ant baits around the house (just in case) so it was a shock to both Jim & I to see that many ants when only a few hours before there weren't any.
Obviously, I threw away the cookies and banana bread. I went through a whole container of lysol wipes and scrubed the kitchen counter, stove and floor. I ran over (drove actually) to Walmart & Home Depot and got tons of ant baits. While at Home Depot, the sales clerk told me that for the past few days, they had quite a few people coming in buying ant baits. Apparently, the rain storm we had a week ago caused the ants to seek shelter and food in houses since their homes were washed away by the storm.
I felt somewhat relieved that we weren't the only ones invaded by ants. Anyways, we put baits all over the kitchen and when I came home from work today, I am happy to say that the baits are working. Hopefully the baits will continue to work because I never ever ever ever want to go thru that ever again.
Now, I need to go take a shower coz the thought of those ants are making me itch.....

"In Bruges" & "Be Kind, Rewind"
Jim & I finished watching "In Bruges" yesterday morning. It's a movie about 2 hit men, Ray (Colin Farrell) and Ken (Brendan Gleeson) after a blotched job, was told to hide out in Bruges (that's in Belgium) by their crime boss, Harry (Ralph Fiennes). Soon, the 2 hitmen started to differ on their view of life & death. Ray, having just blotched his first hit job, was feeling remorse on what he had done. While Ken, who had been doing that line of work for a long time is starting to feel that there is more to life than killing people. They soon found out why Harry had them hiding in Bruges for 2 weeks.
The movie was pretty good with a climatic ending. Clemency Poesy played Ray's girlfriend whom he met while hiding in Bruges. If you a big "Harry Potter" fan like I am, you will notice that 3 of the actors were in the Harry Potter movies at one point or another. This being Ralph Fiennes (Lord Voldermort), Brendan Gleeson (Professor Alastor "Mad-Eye" Moody) and Clemency Poesy (Fleur Delacor). It is a British movie with the actors talking in British accent so some of the humor might not come through for you Americans. Do watch it if you like dark comedy....
We also saw "Be Kind, Rewind" yesterday. Mike (Mos Def) is a clerk working in a video store owned by Elroy Fletcher (Danny Glover) in Passaic, New Jersey. Jerry (Jack Black) is an "eccentric" friend of Mike, who believes in government conspiracy. While Mr Fletcher was out of town (leaving Mike in charge of the video store), Jerry accidentally erased all of Mr Fletcher's video collections. So as not to arouse suspicion of Miss Falewicz (Mia Farrow), who reports the coming and goings of the video store to Mr Fletcher every night via their nightly 8pm phone calls, Mike & Jerry re shoot the movies.
Jack Black & Mos Def were funny and it was nice to see Mia Farrow back on film but the movie got a little boring for me towards the end. If you are a big Jack Black fan, you will like this movie or otherwise you'll be hoping that your memory is erased from watching this movie.

Jim & I finally saw "Brokeback Mountain" last weekend on Bravo (channel 60). I thought that it's a good movie. I have to admit, when it first came out in the theaters, I was a little apprehensive about watching it. It got good reviews but I still resisted watching it. Then finally curiousity took over and when it came on tv last weekend, I saw it. And honestly, I don't see what the bruhaha is all about. And what I mean here is about the homosexuality of the movie.
The movie did not show the guys having sex. It's not about that at all. It's about love and the sacrifice that they do for that love as well as to avoid the prejudice that they face. This world could definitely do with less prejudice and bigotry...
Heath Ledger & Jake Gyllenhaal played Ennis Del Mar & Jack Twist. 2 men, a ranch hand and an aspiring rodeo cowboy, met in 1963 Wyoming while herding sheeps developed a life-long bond. When the herding season ended, they parted way but soon realized their true feelings for each other. They went thru 19 years of trials and tribulation (marriage, kids etc) when it all ended tragically.
Michelle Williams played Ennis Del Mar's wife, Alma and Anne Hathaway played Jack Twist's wife Lureen Newsome. All 4 actors were great in this movie. Watch it if you can.....
Other recommendations:
"Boys Don't Cry" - Hillary Swank

Quails
I left work at about 6:40pm last Thursday evening after being at work since 7:30am. As I was walking to my car, I came across a family of quails on the pavement, most likely looking for dinner. There were the papa & mama quail as well as about a dozen of their baby quails. They were so cute!!! I tried to be as quiet as I can but as soon as they saw me, they ran into the bush by the pavement except for one baby quail. It was concentrating so much on getting his/her food that it didn't notice me standing there. It finally looked up and noticed me watching and it turned around looking for its family. It was kinda comical to see it kept turning its head in a panic, trying to find his family. When it finally spotted them under the bush and it ran for it... I managed to take this pic of them with my cellphone before they went into hiding.... Sorry, the picture is not very good/clear, it was after all taken from a cellphone and it was starting to get dark...

To D.B
* A "love note" from Dr. K to Dr. G....
As he sat on the seat in his favorite room, Dr. G emitted an odifourous gloom.
To turn on the fan would have been wise as he sat there, the stench began to sting in his eyes.
He went in the room to read some x-rays but the stench and the gloom affected his gaze.
He said,"I came in this room to read and to think but I can't concentrate because of the stink."
As he sat in the silence and hush, he realized the solution was only to flush.
Down went the lever and the bowl began to drain along with the poo and half of his brain.

Cubs swept series against Sox
My FAVORITE team, the Chicago Cubs swept the series against the Chicago White Sox this weekend, 3-0. They won 4-3 (Friday), 11-7 (Saturday) and 7-1 (Sunday). This makes their home win 32-8. Above is the song we sing every time they win...
GO CUBS GO!!!

American Gangster
We rented this DVD the other day and just started watching it. In fact Jim is still watching it. I gave up about half an hour into the movie. There are a few famous actors in it, Denzel Washington, Russell Crowe, Josh Brolin...etc but somehow I'm just not into the movie.
It is based on a true story about a detective (Russell Crowe) in the 70's who brought down the druglord (Denzel Washington) who have been importing drugs from Thailand....That's about all I saw..he he he. So, I really don't have any opinion about this movie. Maybe I'm just tired and wasn't in the mood to watch the movie at the moment...I don't know. So, there you go...
Other movies I like by actors in this movie:
1) Anything by Denzel Washington
2) Gladiator - Russell Crowe
3) The Insider - Russell Crowe
4) A Beautiful Mind - Russell Crowe
5) LA Confidential - Russell Crowe
6) No Country for Old Men - Josh Brolin
7) Flirting with Disaster - Josh Brolin

"Gone Baby Gone"
Jim & I just finished watching this movie on DVD today. We both liked the movie except for the ending...
The movie is about 2 Boston area private detectives, Patrick Kenzie (Casey Affleck - yes younger brother to Ben Affleck) and Angie Gennaro (Michelle Monaghan - yes younger sister to Bridgette Monaghan) who were hired by the aunt, Bea McCready, of missing 4 year old girl named Amanda McCready. Bea hired Patrick & Angie against her husband and the police wishes.
Captain Jack Doyle (Morgan Freeman) was the chief police who heads the investigation, who himself had lost his 12 year old daughter due to kidnapping. He asked his 2 detectives in the case, Remy Bressart (Ed Harris) and Nick Pole (John Ashton) to cooperate with Patrick & Angie. The more Patrick & Angie investiges, the deeper they go into the world of drugs and conspiracies.
Like I said earlier, we liked this movie except for how it ended. All the actors were really good in it especially Casey Affleck. Oh btw, Ben Affleck directed this movie....
